Historic Lake District House
Our house is steeped in history and in one of the most glorious locations anywhere, in a glacial valley between two lakes. We are in the heart of the World Heritage Site and National Park, very close to Beatrix Potter’s house & lake Windermere.
The house is well appointed & furnished with antiques and art that reflect my love of interiors.
It’s an old house, much loved & well lived in by us and our dogs & cat, so don’t expect perfection! It’s perfectly imperfect & homely and we love the feeling of age & history with a glass roofed Victorian billiards room which we use for watching tv and playing piano in summer, working servants bells & beautiful Georgian plasterwork.
It’s a house built for Christmas in our opinion! We have a long list of projects & jobs to do and it’s definitely a work in progress! This year we have worked on part of the back garden and now have a new flower garden to enjoy in the summer & redecorated our sitting room.
One of the bedrooms is in a converted stone built outbuilding with the hot tub next to it in a wooded glade- we are Airbnb Superhosts but block this off when we are swapping.
With a walled garden, orchard & wood fired hot tub, there is plenty of recreational space, squishy sofas, & well equipped kitchen as we love to cook.
About the location
The house is in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site that is the English Lake District. We are walking distance to two lakes, Windermere (biggest lake in England) and Esthwaite Water.
Walk for miles from the doorstep. Swim in the village tarn on hot days, then walk to the village pub for a refreshing drink overlooking the mountains. Trains from the nearest station get you to London in 2.5 hours and Edinburgh in 2 hours. Hawkshead village is 2 miles away with pubs, a grocery store, outdoor equipment shops and the old Grammar School museum where William Wordsworth was educated. We’re also not far from Ambleside, Bowness & the Wordsworth village of Grasmere, home to Dove Cottage & Rydal Mount. Coniston is 4 miles away with the magnificent Old Man mountain to climb and the atmospheric Coniston Water to explore.
