Knaresborough is a charming, historic market town in North Yorkshire, dramatically perched on cliffs above the River Nidd. Famous for its iconic railway viaduct, 12th-century castle ruins, and quirky attractions, it is the perfect spot for riverside walks and traditional boat hire.
Attractions & Activities:
- Knaresborough Castle: Perched on the cliffs, the ruined castle grounds offer stunning views of the river and viaduct.
- Mother Shipton`s Cave: Located on the opposite side of the river, this is England’s oldest paid visitor attraction (open since 1630).
- River Nidd Boat Hire: Rent one of the iconic red and green rowboats.
Town & Surroundings:
- The Market Place: The town hosts a thriving, traditional market every Wednesday. Surrounded by historic shopfronts, it`s a great place to stop for local treats.
- Nidd Gorge: A beautiful, wooded landscape just upstream of the town, perfect for family picnics and wildlife watching.
- Train Views: Arriving by train provides an unforgettable view, as the railway line crosses the 78-arch Victorian viaduct high above the river gorge
Getting here by train: regular services run from York (approx. 25 minutes) and Leeds (approx. 45 minutes).
