Portmellon, Mevagissey, Cornwall

Our home in Portmellon is a two bedroom mid-terraced house facing Portmellon Cove and the sea. It was built in 1988 on the site of a prestigious former boat building workshop. The cove is very tidal, with a large beach at low tide and the sea coming to the sea wall at high tide. It is only 25 yards from our front door, across a small road, to the beach.

The house consists of two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor and a living room, kitchen with dining area and cloakroom on the ground floor. The front windows look over the cove out to St Austell Bay and the back windows look over a small and private back garden which is a sun trap in good weather. There is a small terrace at the front of the house, with a table and chairs, ideal for an al fresco meal or a well earned glass of wine whilst watching the many activities on the beach and on the sea. There is a BBQ in the back garden with garden chairs and table. There is a parking place for one car.

The front bedroom has a king size bed whilst the back bedroom has a double bed. The small kitchen is fully fitted with an electric oven and hob, microwave, air fryer, and washing machine with a tumble dryer. There is no dish washer.

The house is our second home (our other home is in Suffolk, so we have houses in both the most western and the most eastern counties in England ) which we have owned for 25 years, prior to which my wife and I lived and worked in the county.

About the location

Portmellon is a small village located in South Cornwall and situated just a short distance from the larger community of Mevagissey. The beautiful beach is surrounded by rocks either side and is ideal for swimming, diving and snorkelling.

Facilities in Portmellon include a recently refurbished pub (the Rising Sun), which is open all year, an outdoor cafe (The Shack), which sells very good pasties!, and a stall which rents kayaks, paddleboards, life jackets etc. These last two facilities are open only in the holiday seasons.

Mevagissey is one of the most popular old style fishing villages in Cornwall and is a 20 minute stroll along the coast from Porttmellon. Mevagissey has a large number of pubs restaurants and shops (including a general stores, a bakery and a vegetable shop) in addition to an aquarium and a small museum ( both of which are free to enter but request donations). There is no public transport in Portmellon whilst Mevagisset has a good local bus service, including to St Austell and Truro. There are also good train and National Express links to both of these towns.

Cornwall is increasingly becoming an all year holiday destination and has a number of attractions of national and international repute. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are about an eight minute drive (one hour walk) from our house whilst the Eden Project is a 40 minutes drive. There are a number of outstanding National Trust properties in the area, particularly Lanhydrock House. In addition to its coastline and beaches, Cornwall is home to some impressive gardens, including Trelissick and Glendurgan. Our house is directly on the Cornish Coastal path, with attractive walks to Gorran Haven and Caerhays to the west and Mevagissey and Charlestown to the east. In the living room of the house are a number of walking guides and brochures on local attractions.

Two nearby larger communities are the town of St Austell (7 miles) and the city of Truro (17 miles) , with its fine cathedral and concert hall.
