Large & beautiful old house near Edinburgh

We live in a big, beautiful building in Dalkeith, a suburb of Edinburgh. Our house used to be an inn, and was built in the late 1600s. It's got lots of lovely features, and an amazing garden (mostly planted by the previous owner who was a fanatical gardener). We feel very lucky to be looking after this place for a while.

It's a 3 bedroom house. There's a downstairs guest room with ensuite shower and toilet. And upstairs there is a second bathroom, a separate toilet, a large master bedroom, a kids' bedroom which has two small beds in it, and a playroom. We’re open to talking to families who’d like to use the kids’ room & playroom too.

We've recently redone our kitchen, which is a big space with doors out onto the garden, and a huge (huge!!) fireplace to have a wood fire. And there's a conservatory with a dining table and cosy seating, which is a blessing in the springtime in Scotland. As soon as the sun is out it gets toasty warm.

Being booksellers ourselves, there's a library landing with plenty of books to browse.

We have some fish who need a sprinkle of food every couple of days. And two cats, one fluffball who’ll make you work for his love, and one very affectionate tabby.

About the location

The house is right by an ancient woodland and river, which is great for local walks. Dalkeith is a 10-15 minute walk up the road with all the standard things you need (supermarket, post office, cafe, etc).

Edinburgh is an easy 25minute drive from our house, or there's an hourly express bus that goes from right outside our door straight into town. There's the possibility of using our car while we're away. We've also got an electric car charger at the house.
