Lovely 5 Bed home in Olonzac, France
Ours is a 120 year old town house in a friendly, bustling village, right in the middle of the wine producing area of the Languedoc. There are many opportunities to visit the surrounding local chateaux for tastings.
Olonzac is the capital of the Miinervois. There is a lively market each Tuesday where you can buy local produce and cheeses, charcuterie, olives, organic vegetables for your evening meal. A choice of bars and restaurants and a supermarket are all within walking distance.
Homps is a picturesque village 10 minutes bike ride away, with canal side restaurants to watch barges glide by on the beautiful Canal du Midi.
You can ride bikes or walk across the vineyards to a swimming lake that has its own cafe from where to watch the sun go down. There are tennis courts, a boules pitch and a park in the town. Everyone gathers at the local bar to take aperitifs, have coffee or check thier e-mails (free wi-fi), they also serve free tapas, or fish and chips once a week.
We have 2 bikes and you can hire more locally. It is great cycling country with routes across the vineyards, along the nearby Canal du Midi and through the rolling countryside.
There are many river swimming spots locally, with fishing and picnicking spots. Go for a swim in the cool waters of the River Aude and then call in to one of our local bars on the way home for an aperitif and some freshly shucked oysters.
We have renovated the house, which has been rewired, plastered and painted. It has been furnished tastefully and stylishly from the local brocantes and vide greniers. Hunting through these make for a fun weekend. We have a traditional large open fireplace in the dining room and a log burner in the sitting room.
There is a small but fully equipped kitchen, 3 loos, a large loft with artist's studio, which, if you are an artist you are welcome to use, and a roof terrace with views over the Black Mountains.
We have a small, gravel courtyard planted with figs, lemons, olives, bougainvillea and lavender where you can dine outside. There are steps up to a raised sun terrace with garden loungers and parasol for lazing about.
The seaside is within a 40 minute drive. There are lovely beaches all along the coast as well as salt lakes with wildlife including flamingoes. The cities of Narbonne and Perpignan make for an interesting visit as well as the Mediaeval walled city of Carcassonne.
There are airports at Carcassonne, which is the nearest at 28 Km and also at Beziers, Perpignan and Toulouse. A Train station at nearby Lezignan Corbiere connects with Paris and Barcelona. Barcelona is a 2-3 hour drive.
The house is perfectly positioned for everything you could want from a holiday in the South of France.
