Walking in to history
That's the wonderful thing about living in Edinburgh, you can walk everywhere - no car needed in our great city and if you want to take in the historic streets, buildings, sights and sounds then there is no better way.
We live in a house that is 15 minutes by bus in to the heart of the city, we are 20 minutes by taxi from the airport and on foot (if you don't keep stopping to take photographs - which you will) then we are 45 minutes on foot from the historic Princes Street which looks up to the ancient castle that dominates our skyline.
2 double bedrooms and 3 single bedrooms, 2 shower rooms and a bathroom, enough room to make sure whoever is putting their make up on there's always another place to get ready! Our home is situated in the quiet area of Ravelston, just off the south side of Queensferry Road and is detached. With a private driveway and fenced in garden, it is the perfect location for a city break in Scotland's capital.
Fully fitted kitchen and utility room with washer and dryer, so even if does rain (and don't believe the hype - Edinburgh is actually a pretty dry city) there's a place to wash and dry your clothes quickly. Separate dining room off the kitchen. Off the hallway we have a spacious living room and to the other side a large family room, with huge DVD collection (plenty of child friendly Disney movies), board games and TV, DVD player and satellite with Amazon Primed and Netflix, so no shortages of movies, Disney, music and all sports channels - something for everyone.
The house is fitted with wi-fi and it is also accessible in the garden, so no need to be in doors unless it's snowing, ah but even then no need as we have a small outside-in house in the garden. Comfortable in Winter as well as Summer, with a small electric fire to keep you warm and cosy. Our garden is a city garden, small and colourful in summer , a patio area with fire pit, ideal for roasting marsh mallows. It's an easily maintained city garden, so it means we can leave it and it looks the same when we come back!!
Our home is family friendly, we have a dog,, a labradoodle called Winnie and we consider swapping with other pet owners. There are 3 single bedrooms and a double bedroom upstairs, so if you have children they wont be far away from you and downstairs we have a further double bedroom with on-suite shower room - in case you do want to get away from the kids!
Off our driveway is a new conversion of our garage which is now a self contained apartment, with it's own small kitchen and bathroom. It also has a small gym and fitted office for remote working.
We walk to work in the city, we walk to the Botanic Gardens, we walk to the Modern Gallery, we walk to beautiful and fashionable Stockbridge - basically the only time you'll need the car is on trips out of the city ....the Highlands of Scotland are only about 1.5 to 2 hours away from Edinburgh, easily reachable and well worth an expedition North.
About the location
Too much to do and so little time to do it all in - there lays your problem. We live so close to so much, with the famous Edinburgh Zoo 30 minutes walk or 5 minutes in the car. The zoo is home to Europe's only pair of Giant Panda's and sits on a hill that looks out across our city.
Then there are the two Galleries of Modern Art only 15 minutes by foot, with the stunning Dean Village just 5 minutes further - this traditional and historic mill village sits on the Water of Leith and is a haven for peace and quiet with a bustling city above it, a rare gem.
From the village why not walk along the Water of Leith in to the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh. It's full of café's and bars, quirky shops and from here you can access the stunning Edinburgh Botanical Gardens (30 minutes walk from our door) - strolling of course.
Princes Street, the heart of Edinburgh's city is 45 minutes walk and there are plenty of buses that leave just 5 minutes from our door that take you right in to the city centre in just 15 minutes. You'll gaze up on to the castle and you'll see the Scott Monument, you'll see Carlton Hill and you'll wonder where do we start?
Lot's of sports are within easy reach, with Edinburgh's two football teams Hibernian and Hearts of Midlothian both with stadium that are within 20 minutes by taxi from the house and then there is the magnificent Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, only 25 minutes by taxi - the world's largest indoor climbing arena, carved out of an old quarry There are water sports and a large dry slope ski centre open all year, golf galore (well we are the home of golf of course) all within an 45 minutes of the house. Beaches close by and plenty of castles, as well as the famous Forth road and rail bridges. Indeed where do you start, there is your first question?
Edinburgh Waverley train station is 15 minutes in a taxi from our home. This is a main line station linking routes across the UK and to the north. Taxi's are widely available in the city, with black cabs, private hire, Uber and Bolt all operational here. Buses galore and can get you anywhere in the city and of course, we have the get on/off tourist buses going around the city.
If you want to relax and take some tours, there are various reputable tourist bus travel companies operating from Edinburgh that will take you to the Highlands and other tourist destinations they include - Timberbush, Rabbie's Tours and The Hairy Coo.
You'll never regret a visit to Edinburgh and to Scotland.
