About the location

Nocera Terinese, a small town in the Calabria region – Southern Italy – is the scenario of a millenary ritual that represents the expression of a people’s identity, which struggles to keep its tradition unaltered through time. The first settlement was concentrated on the plateau of Terina, as confirmed by the discovery of numerous stone axes and hatchets, triangle-shaped and polished ceramic fragments pre-Hellenic. The city was destroyed by Hannibal or according to some, it destroyed the walls and wiped out the Saracens in 960. It was the seat of laure, built by monks who found refuge in these lands to escape the iconoclastic persecutions. A monastery of Basilian monks of the sixth century was opposite to the plane of Terina, in the district VURGHE or Hamlets, where were located the houses of the people escaped destruction. Other laure Byzantine were to the west of the village, S. Sophia Santi Quaranta Maletta, Saints in the Eastern Range of Arata. The territory was protected by defensive towers and lookout, including that of the Torrazzo on the floor of Terina.

On Holy Saturday, in Nocera Terinese, during the procession with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows in the streets of the village, "Vattiente", or flailing, wanders the streets, with his arms and legs discoveries, beginning to hitting the thighs with the 'pink', a disc of cork about four inches in diameter, which beat the meat promotes better circulation, then you whip publicly with a disc in cork similar to the above for the size and shape, which are nailed thirteen shards of glass , for the 13 apostles, which lead to the leakage of blood.
vattianti of nocera terineseDurante Vattiente complete its journey on a stopover in the squares of the Church, on the doors of the homes of friends or relatives and when he meets the statue of the Pietà in the procession. In these places the vattiente makes the sign of the cross, washing the blood present on the thighs helped by the wine, then whip with the thistle to facilitate the escape of blood. Concluded his lap, the Vattiente returns to the place where it started; here you wash your legs with an infusion of water and rosemary to stop the leakage of blood, then wearing street clothes to join the procession of the faithful in procession.
The rite of Vattiente closes the celebrations of Holy Week. This is a tradition that survives to the times, you repeat the same ritual that was developed in 1300.

During the Holy Week previous the Easter celebrations, the village goes through an intense spiritual and practical preparation for the big event that takes place in the weekend. The statue of the Madonna is taken out from its enshrine to be venerated and prepared for the procession in which it will encounter the Vattienti. These figures, who beat their legs with the Cardo and the Rosa (two pieces of cork, one of which has 13 fragments of glass in it), represent the sufferings of Jesus at the column, and are attached to the Ecce Homo, or the representation of Jesus wearing red while on trial.

Although many have criticized this ritual for being “violent” it is vital to understand the importance it has in affirming the essence of the people who practice it, which feel an extremely strong sense of belonging to the town and a bound to the soul of their culture during this interesting expression of identity.
