Durham city family home home swap

Our house is a lovely 1930s semi-detached house which has been decorated and restored throughout in keeping with the original feel of the house. Most distinctively it has a very large open-plan living area, courtesy of an extension built by a Canadian family who lived here some 15 years ago, modelled on a 'Canadian grand room'. This makes it wonderful for families as a large sitting room, piano, expansive bookshelves and kitchen all interlink and provide a perfect place to socialise. Off this large space is a conservatory surrounded by trees where we currently have our large dining table, seating 8, and in addition there is a further TV/playroom downstairs (with a double sofa bed if needed) and store/garage/study. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, currently children's rooms (but two are full-sized single beds with another single sofa-bed in one room), and a double bedroom is on the second floor. There is off-street parking on our drive and a small garden with pond and playhouse.

About the location

Our house is located centrally in the Durham City, north-east England, a World Heritage Site. It is a short 15/20 minute walk to the city's stunning river banks, cathedral and ancient bridges. Durham City is itself well worth visiting but within an hour/hour and a half of the house are some of the most wonderful rural locations in England - including the stunning Northumberland Coast (Holy Island, Bamborough and Dunstanborough Castles, Alnwick Garden and Castle, the Farne Islands etc...). Kielder Forest and rural inland Northumberland, the Roman remains along Hadrian's Wall and around Corbridge and Hexham, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Weardale, Teesdale, Highforce Waterfall), the North Lakes in Cumbria (Ullswater, Derwent Water etc...), the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the beautiful fishing village of Staithes and Jurassic Coast around Whitby in North Yorkshire.
Since we've lived in Durham we have been overwhelmed by what is accessible to us on day-trips and never tire of exploring the beauty of the countryside in this remote and sparsely populated part of England. Finally we are also less than 2 hours from Edinburgh, 45 minutes from York and 15 minutes from Newcastle on the train - cities well worth visiting for the day.
