Beautiful and big 1-bedroom flat in South London

My home is a large, lovely one-bedroom flat located in a leafy part of Brixton Hill – one of London's hippest and most happening neighbourhoods.

The flat, on the first floor of a three-story building and dating from the early 20th century, has just been completely re-decorated in elegant French Grey, which really brings the place to life. The living room faces south and gets wonderful summer light in the morning and early afternoon, while the extremely large bedroom faces a back garden away from the street and is the perfect place to sleep in late in the morning. The flat features hardwood floors throughout, as well as kitchen with washing machine, a bathroom with bath/shower and access to a large garden great for barbecues. The living room has a couch that doubles as a comfortable bed and we have an extra bed as well which can be added to the living room because there is so much space.

I am an anthropologist and travel writer, and have furnished my home with eclectic art and design, from African statues to an Indian desk to classic 1950s Danish Modern furniture.

The flat is extremely well located for transport links into central London: Oxford street is 10 minutes on the nearby Victoria line (a 10-minute walk from the house), and there are many buses that pass right by here. The house is located just down from the popular White Horse pub and is a few minutes' walk from several other entertainment spots, including Effra Social, Hootenanny and Negril – as well as the famous Brixton Market Village, which is currently one of the hottest places to eat and drink in London. A supermarket is right across the road.

About the location

London needs no introduction. It's a city that has everything you could ever want in a modern European city, and then some – culture, amazing food, outstanding (and often free) restaurants, music, theatre and, of course, The Queen. London is a spectacular place to live – I love this city SO much – but Brixton is the most amazing place to have a home . Brixton is one of London's hippest and most desirable places to live – alternative, artistic, quirky diverse and very cosmopolitan. The neighborhood has some serious energy, not least of all in the scores of shops, restaurants, art galleries and markets along Electric Avenue and Brixton Village Market – voted the UK's best local marketplace last year. Brixton has a gritty past, but it's present is nothing short of stupendous.
