Norwood

Norwood is a large, light, and beautifully modernised and restored Victorian Villa in a conservation area in Penzance.

It is full of art, books and interesting objects. The garden is pretty and very sunny and a bright conservatory opens onto it. There is a very large open plan kitchen / diner with utility plus downstairs loo off it. Both the conservatory and sitting room have wood burners. There are four double bedrooms three with double beds (one King sized) and one with two singles. The largest bedroom on the first floor has a dressing room and en-suite shower. Bedroom 2 and the family bathroom are also on this floor. The second floor has two bedrooms under the eaves, one with a double the other two singles. A fifth room is for our storage but contains a cot which could be used.

About the location

Norwood is set in an ideal holiday location in Arty Penzance just 2 mins from Penlee park (large play / adventure area, a brilliant gallery, two cafes and an outdoor theatre in summer months) and 3 minutes from the prom and beach. Parking is free around us or there are long stay car parks close by.

Newlyn with its fishing fleets, fish mongers, pubs, cafes and bars is a 15 minutes walk along the sea front and a further 15 to Mousehole. Marazion is about 45 minutes in the other direction. Morab gardens, a stunning sub tropical garden complete with pretty bandstand, community house and library is about 5 minutes as is Penzance town Centre. The nearest pub is a couple of minutes as is the best fish and chip shop in town. Jubilee Pool, a beautiful early twentieth century lido complete with a balmy thermally heated section is 5 minutes walk and the station and bus station (St Ives, Truro, Exeter, London) are a 15 minute level walk along the seafront.

Penzance itself is buzzing with lots of cafes, independent shops, galleries and a weekly farmers market. The Savoy cinema is 5 minutes walk or Newlyn Film house an independent art house cinema is 15. Apart from the theatre in the park the Acorn Theatre in town is open all year with a full programme of bands, comedy acts etc. The Ritz has a similar programme of film, theatre and community events.

Penzance Town beach is pebbles but great for swimming, you can also swim in the inner harbour or walk 15 minutes to Long rock, a glorious 3 mile dog friendly stretch of sand between Penzance and Marazion. Lidel, the Co-Op and Asda supermarket are just 5 minutes walk from the house along with bakeries, a cheese shop, two delis, an excellent butchers and greengrocers. Two health food stores including brilliant independent Archie Browns, lots of vintage, antique, charity, craft, jewellery, sewing, fabric and clothes shops are in the famous and increasingly fashionable Chapel Street and Causeway Head. Penzance has a foodie reputation and there are lots of good cafes, restaurants, wine and cocktail bars and takeaways.

The Isles of Scilly are on our doorstep, (small plane from Lands End or ferry or helicopter from Penzance). St Ives, Lamorna, Newlyn, St Just, Marazion, Porthcurno, Sennen and Mousehole are all close by. The far West of Cornwall is renowned for its glorious sandy beaches and rugged cliffs and coves and Sennen, one of the UKs best surfing beaches is 15 minutes away by car.

Local attractions include St Michaels Mount in Marazion and lots of stunning, semi tropical gardens. The area is rich in neolithic sites, including holy wells, ancient villages, burial chambers and stone circles.

The area is rich in celtic culture with `fiddledy-dee and blue grass music nights held weekly in many local pubs. Each town has its own `feast day` and festival with spectacular parades, music and Cornish dancing. The world famous open air Minnack Theatre, set into the cliffs above the beach at Porthcurno is 20 kminutes drive from us and a must during the summer season.

Spring comes early with daffs flowering from January onwards and Autumn is late with warm days through to November. If Art is your thing there are good quality public and private galleries everywhere, as many artists live and work in this part of the world. Tremenere Sculpture Garden just outside Penzance is well worth a visit.

Internationally renowned galleries in Penzance include Penlee Gallery, The Exchange, Cornwall Contemporary and the Light House Gallery. St Ives houses include Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Museum, The Leach Pottery, The New Craftsman, the Belgrave and the Millenium Galleries together with several other smaller galleries. In Penzance top class public galleries include Penlee House (the Newlyn and St Ives Schools of painting), The Exchange and Newlyn Art Galleries, (world class contemporary touring shows as well as Cornish art) and privately owned Cornwall Contemporary. And there are many, many others including artist led spaces, ceramicists, artisan jewellers and shops selling local crafts.

Shopping is interesting everywhere with most towns and villages having either weekly or fortnightly farmers markets. Driving from place to place you will also see dozens of honesty box stalls selling local fruit, flowers and vegetables. Our own local shop has excellent local produce including home made cakes! The pace of life is slower in West Cornwall, people are friendly and always have time to smile and be pleasant in shops, cafes and pubs. Boskenna itself is extremely peaceful, we are surrounded by farmland and woods and there is no traffic apart from the farm tractors and the cars that belong to the people who live in the Hamlet.
