Houndean Rise

We have a charming detached house built in 1947 that is ten minutes walk from the centre of this ancient and beautiful town. The house is quiet and has a large south facing private sunny garden with far reaching views over the neighbouring South Downs National Park. In the winter the house is warm (the Aga keeps the kitchen toasty) and there is an open fire in the living room (logs provided) by which you can toast your crumpets. The main bedroom has an ensuite loo and shower and there is an additional family bathroom. Our TV is linked to SKY (Foxtel) and we have super fast wireless internet.

The lively seaside city of Brighton is 20 minutes away (catch a bus from the stop at the bottom of our garden) and London is 60 minutes (two trains every hour). If you enjoy walking, the South Downs are, literally, on our doorstep, and, if you want to visit France there is an excellent regular ferry from Newhaven (15 minutes drive). Gatwick airport (great connections to Europe) is 25 minutes on the train. But Lewes will captivate you. It has many antique shops, second hand bookshops, good cafes and restaurants as well as beautiful open spaces and the oldest (and coldest) open air swimming pool in England.

About the location

We are close to beautiful and unspoilt countryside but at the same time the fleshpots of Brighton and London are easily accessed. You can go to the theatre in London and be back home before midnight. The Edwardian seaside town of Eastbourne is close and a walk along its famous 3 mile promenade will make you feel young (most of the other walkers will be ancient). You can walk out of our house and into the South Downs National Park, you can visit nearby Glyndebourne or Charleston Farmhouse (home to many of the Bloomsbury group). But the real delight is the town of Lewes itself with its beautiful buildings, narrow "twittens" green spaces, and friendly people. G
