Lovely 1 Bed home swap in Isle of Lewis, Scotland

The Outer Hebrides - also known as the Western Isles - stretch for 130 miles and look out on their western side to the Atlantic Ocean.

Here on the edge of Europe is a striking mix of landscapes from windswept golden sands to harsh, heather-backed mountains and peat bogs.

An elemental beauty pervades each of the more than two hundred islands that make up the archipelago, only a handful of which are actually inhabited.

Lewis and Harris form the northernmost island in the Hebrides. Though actually part of the same land mass, they are thought of as different islands and each has its own distinctive culture, traditions and heritage. Lewis in the north is the largest island in the group and its main town of Stornoway is a busy centre of island life, its natural harbour a thriving fishing port.

The whole landscape of the island is built for adventure with great sea cliffs to abseil and bays and islands to explore by kayak or boat.

If you thought the Outer Hebrides was an expensive location to get to, we are delighted to be able to tell you about the cut in ferry fares to the islands. Road Equivalent Tariff is with us meaning that the cost of travelling on Calmac ferries from Uig in Skye to Harris and Ullapool to Stornoway have been slashed. The return cost of getting a car and 2 people to the islands will now only cost you from ?65.

Built in 1946 as the village post office, this cosy cottage has been refurbished to a high standard and provides an ideal island retreat.

Tolsta Chaolais is one of the prettiest villages on the island, nestled between a sea loch, Loch Roag, and a freshwater loch, Loch a'Bhaile. It is set off the main road, where children, pets and livestock roam freely.

This traditional crofting village provides an ideal base for immersing in island life and touring Lewis & Harris. Stornoway is under 20 miles away. You needn't go far for things to do - within ten miles of The Old Post Office are:

Callanish Stones
Dun Carloway Broch
Garenin Blackhouse Village
Dalmore & Dalbeg Beaches
Doune Braes Hotel
Hebridean Soap Factory
Westside Coastal Walk
Shawbost Swimming Pool
Loch na Muilne RSPB Reserve

Birdwatchers will marvel at the healthy populations of golden and white tailed eagles, divers, waders and corncrakes. Walkers will appreciate the hills of Harris & Uig, within an hours drive. Day trips are available to incredible offshore islands, including St Kilda, where you can experience some of the largest sea bird colonies in the world and, if you're lucky, watch dolphins, whales and sharks.

Ideally situated for surfing/windsurfing/kitesurfing holidays, conveniently located near some of the best surf breaks in Scotland. Instructors available locally.

If you'd rather just relax, why not sit in front of the stove with the local nature and history books and soak in the atmosphere.
