About the location

Lewes has a long and vibrant history of opposition to the monarchy and pro-republican sentiments going back to the revolutionary decades of the 17th century.
Political theorist and revolutionary Tom Paine lived in Lewes in 1768, later becoming one of the founding fathers of American democracy. His Head Strong club continues with lively political talks. Lewes is a Transition Town and has its own currency, and continues to value independence and innovation.
Lewes is famous for Bonfire Night on November 5. It not only marks the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but also commemorates the memory of the seventeen Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake for their faith during the Marian Persecutions.
Located in the South Downs National Park, Lewes is a beautiful old town on the River Ouse.
