The Cobbles @ Gold Hill - Shaftesbury, Dorset

If you have ever seen Ridley Scott`s famous Hovis bread ad from the 1970`s then you would have seen Gold Hill as this is where the ad was filmed. At the top of Gold Hill is "The Cobbles" - a perfectly formed one bedroom terraced cottage. We have completed a lengthy renovation on the cottage where we stripped the interior, retained any characterful features and created a classic modern interior. Complete with limestone floor and underfloor heating, wood burner, bespoke kitchen, new shower room, rustic chandelier, rough sawn timber ceiling and original lime washed beams, the interior is still "country" but with a clean, modern twist. None of the free standing furniture is new, it has all been stripped back and restored, some of it painted in the muted hues of Little Greene paint. Visitors from around the world come to Gold Hill to photograph this quintessential piece of England but if all the attention gets too much you can retreat into the cottage garden at the back of the house which is an oasis of calm and tranquility.

About the location

Shaftesbury is a hill top Dorset market town which is surrounded by glorious English countryside. Gold Hill is tucked away behind the high street so it means you have the convenience of shops, restaurants and pubs just steps away from your door and yet Gold Hill is traffic free (cars can park for free at the bottom of the hill where the cobbles end) and it has the most amazing views over the Blackmore Vale. Gold Hill can be celebrated in any season, whether it`s a misty winter`s night with the smell of wood-smoke in the air or a bright summer`s day with a slight haze over the miles of green rolling hills, there is always a photo opportunity. Tear yourself away though to see other amazing sights - Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath, the New Forest, Stourhead, Dorset`s Jurassic Coast and the sandy beaches of Studland are all day trips plus there is a long list of stately homes to visit - Longleat, Kingston Lacy, Wilton House to name a few plus as you are in Hardy country, you can even visit a cob and thatch cottage which was Thomas Hardy`s birthplace.
