Traditional whitewashed Lakeland cottage with stunning views home swap

Chestnut Cottage is a 300 year old stone-built farm cottage with stunning views over Derwentwater, Borrowdale, Newlands and more. This cottage looks like it belongs in a Beatrix Potter book and lies on the southern slopes of Skiddaw. There are beautiful bike rides and walks from the door, red squirrels, ospreys and much other wildlife to watch out for. Set in the pretty hamlet of Millbeck about a mile outside the bustling market town of Keswick the cottage is both peaceful and accessible. A large patio makes the perfect spot to sink a few local beers and soak in the marvellous views after a great day in the hills.
The cottage is cosily furnished with a log/ coal fired range in the living room, massive oak beams, comfortable beds and all the walking, climbing and cycling guidebooks and maps you could possibly need.
Be aware that the cottage features the original 300 year old slate staircase which is pretty steep at the top; not suitable for the infirm or toddlers and very poor disabled access to the bedrooms until we build the extension.
The bathroom currently has no bath, but a really good powerful shower. It's downstairs.
Coming in through the porch brings you into the lounge with sofa and two comfy chairs, and a dining table which seats 6. The kitchen is off the lounge and has a new fridge/ freezer, new oven, dishwasher, microwave, electric hob, Denby crockery, good quality utensils, pans, baking equipment etc. The other door off the lounge takes you to a tiled passageway (drying area) leading to the shower room/ WC and steep slate stairs up to the two bedrooms: one double, one sleeping 4 in bunk beds and a single with a pull-out full size single bed underneath. Outside there's a large double garage where we store our bikes and climbing gear, a garden with a large patio (table and chairs) and some cottage-style flower and herb beds. The garden backs straight on to the hill side so you can climb directly up Skiddaw from the garden.
We're a bit wary of allowing dogs because almost all our neighbours keep poultry which have been attacked by dogs in the past. We're not dog owners ourselves so although we are not very fussy about the house we do notice dog hairs. If your dog has short hair and no appetite for chicken (and your house is in California with a 50 metre swimming pool) you might be able to persuade us!

About the location

The Lake District is the most beautiful mountain area in England (this coming from a Yorkshireman). Millbeck is an unspoilt village in the northern lakes which boasts direct access to the Skiddaw and Blencathra ranges and commands a panoramic view over most of the northern half of the national park.
