Blaenau Ffestiniog, Snowdonia, Wales home swap
Old miner’s cottage in Blaenau Ffestiniog ‘the town that roofed the world’. We have fabulous views of the Moelwyn Mountains. This is our second home which we have renovated and refurbished over a number of years.
The cottage is small, cosy and homely – not designer or chic at all! Downstairs is one big room with kitchen, dining and lounge area with a fold out sofa bed. Upstairs is one double bedroom and a large bathroom with bath/shower. Please note that the stairs are steep and narrow and any children MUST be supervised!
Intentionally, we have no internet access or TV reception at the cottage – ideal to get away from it all! There is a DVD player and TV monitor so bring plenty of films or catch up with your DVD boxsets! Please also note that some mobile phone signals in the area are not always good because of the mountains.
The cottage can sleep 4 (2 on sofa bed) and has gas central heating and double glazing. There is a small patio and steps up to a small rear enclosed garden. Well behaved pets are welcome. There is off road parking for one car. Strictly no smoking.
About the location
Blaenau Ffestiniog is an excellent holiday base for exploring Snowdonia and the surrounding area. The town is ideally situated in North Wales as it’s only a short drive to Porthmadog, Portmeirion, the coastal towns of Pwllheli and Criccieth and the wonderful Black Rock Sands beach. Northwards is Betws-y-Coed, Llanberis and the start of the trails to climb Snowdon. The north coast and the towns of Llandudno and Conwy are approximately a 40 minute drive away. A car is essential to get around the local area. The Ffestiniog Railway runs between the Blaenau Ffestiniog and Porthmadog – this is the steam train that used to bring the slate down to the harbour and is now a world famous tourist attraction, steaming through the fabulous mountain scenery. Llechwedd Slate Caverns with its downhill mountain bike track, giant underground trampolines (yes honestly!) and zip wires is another local favourite for the adventurous.
The town itself is small but has shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs which are within a short walk from the cottage.
In the area:
The Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland railway
Llechwedd Slate Caverns
Antur Stiniog (outdoor activities including downhill mountain biking walking, kayaking, history, nature, fishing, wild camping)
Beddgelert – fabulous ice-cream shop, riverside walks through National Trust land
National Slate Museum – the history of slate mining with very interesting demonstration of slate splitting. Added bonus is it’s free!
Bodnant Gardens – lovely National Trust gardens
Lake Vyrnwy – beautiful lake with woodland walks and RSPB nature reserve
Llandudno – get the tram to the top for fabulous views from the Great Orme
