Wine and Thermal Spa Hills, Slovenia home swap
My home has three levels. Each is about 75m2.
The ground floor has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a large reception-dining room with a powered wood-burner, and a winter kitchen. It is decorated in traditional Slovenian style.
Upstairs is a renovated loft with 12 Velux windows giving views of three different countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Austria). Views of a fourth (Hungary) are a 5-minute drive away. The style is 'London flat' with an open plan divided into three sections, bedroom, eating area and office / tv lounge / exercise area.
The basement has a large summer kitchen with a wood-fired stove and a long wooden table to seat 12 people, a laundry room / bathroom and wine cellar. It gives onto a secluded sun-terrace with superb views over the hills, vineyards, a manageable lawn and an organic fruit orchard. In front of the house there is a carport for two cars and a paved garden.
There are two proper double bedrooms with three other double sofa bed options in the lounge areas. There is WIFI and super-fast optical broadband. The international TV package has 115 channels of which about 30 are in English and 7 are sports.
Over the road are the friendliest, most hospitable neighbours in the world who speak English and German as well as their native Slovenian. They are friendly but unobtrusive and, most importantly, they support Arsenal football club.
About the location
The Jeruzalem Wine Hills of Prlekija are a largely undiscovered rural idyll on the sunny side of the Alps in the heart of Central Europe. The soil is amongst the most fertile in the world and horizontal vineyard terraces follow the contours of the surrounding hills. They have been making wine since Roman times.
My village is a hamlet of 100 people that sits on a ridge with stunning views in all directions. It adjoins another village in the valley of 200 with 2 bars, a shop and a train station. All around there are hillside family run restaurants and places to sample the quality local produce and wines. Prices are cheap and the people are welcoming.
6 km away is Ormož, a town of 3000 people with a castle, a public swimming pool in summer (entrance 2.70€) and a choice of 4 supermarkets. The people are hospitable, friendly and crime is practically non-existent. Ormož lies on the border with Croatia, 25 km from the Baroque town of Varaždin and 100 km from the Croatian capital Zagreb.
Austria and Hungary are both a 30 minute drive or 1-1.5 hour bike ride away. There are 4 thermal spas / saunas and water-parks (entrance 5-12€) within a half-hour drive. Maribor and winter skiing are 45 minutes away. Graz, Lake Balaton and Zagreb can all be reached within 90 minutes . Further afield are Ljubljana (under two hours), Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, the Slovenian and Croatian coasts (3 hours), Venice and Salzburg (4 hours), Munich and Belgrade (5 hours), Milan and Ukraine can both be reached in 6-7 hours.
