About the location
My highlights would be: a trip to Mont-St-Michel, simply stunning; on the way there you will see signs for Alligator Bay, it’s not overly pricey and is good fun for the kids, hope you like snakes!
The forest of Villecartier is just a 5 minute drive…. It has a go ape course for all ages; one of the tree-top routes sends you out over the lake. It is free to park here and you can walk all the way around the lake which takes about 45 minutes.
The best beach for the family is at Carolles north of Avranche, it takes about 40 minutes in the car. It is sandy and flat, great for ball games. The beaches between Cancale and St Malo are also fantastic; you can be there in about 35 minutes. Find the Pointe Du Grouin north of Cancale if you go that way, it has great views. My favourite beach along that stretch is at ‘Plage de Chevret’. It’s hard to find and the parking can be tricky if you get there after 11am, but boy is it worth it, the beach is golden (and good rock climbing although the rocks are barnacle rough).
There is a street market at Dol de Bretagne (10 minutes in car) on a Saturday morning. It is about a third of a mile long I really like taking my kids there. It starts about 8 and they start to pack up about half 11, so don’t leave it late.
There is an American Cemetery at St James which is very emotional, it contains the remains of over 4,000 WW2 American soldiers and is kept in immaculate condition; not far from there is the beautiful town of Fougeres, a must go place as it is very historical and has a stunning medieval castle which you can pay to walk around (nearby find the cathedral gardens they have fabulous views and are immaculately maintained). Fougeres also has a good Saturday morning market.
My favourite place to eat is in Pontorson High Street, it is half way up on the left as you go UP the street, and it’s called ‘Le Grillon’. It’s a nice French restaurant but gets very busy so worth forward booking if you fancy it. The best pizza/pasta place is on the opposite side near the top of the High Street its called La Squadra.
Add in Brittany's capital, Rennes; the medieval town of Dinan; the walled port of St Malo; Cancale, the oyster capital of Brittany; all within 45 minutes by car; and you have plenty to do and see when you go exploring the area.
