Cottage in Derbyshire Peak District National Park

The cottage is on a small lane above the village of Grindleford, with south facing views across the Hope Valley to Frogatt Edge. We are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Peak District.

The original 2-roomed semi-detached gritstone cottage was built 200 years ago and had two additions. There are steps between parts of the house, with hand rails to assist less mobile adults. There is a main bedroom, and one small bedroom with an en suite shower room upstairs. Downstairs, there is a living room, kitchen with dining table and a bathroom. The recently added conservatory looks out to the flower and vegetable garden.

There is a steep climb up from the main part of the village. There are no overlooking properties and the silence at night is broken occasionally by the sound of owls.

About the location

Grindleford is on the Derwent River in the Peak District National Park. There are walks from our door, down along the river and up to the Edge (with the steep walk back), and up the hill over the moors. There are hundreds of walks nearby, along the Edges, and in the moors and dales. We have walking books and OS maps.

The stately homes of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are nearby. Hathersage, a 10 minutes drive, has an open-air heated swimming pool, shops, cafes, pubs and the well-known David Mellor cutlery factory and kitcheware shop with cafe. Eyam, a pretty village with an interesting history, is a short drive (or hour`s walk) away. The market town of Bakewell is popular with visitors and has a variety of shops and supermarkets. Tideswell has an interesting church, shops and cafes, and a second hand bookshop. Fischer`s at nearby Calver is an award-winning restaurant. There are plenty of pubs serving good food in the area. Sheffield is in easy reach by car, train or bus. The Hope Valley train line from Sheffield to Manchester, through spectacular countryside, stops at Grindleford.

The village has a small community shop, with fresh artisan bread, home made cake and Hope Valley ice cream. The shop has essential groceries, dairy and other chilled products, and a limited choice of vegetables and fruit. The nearby Sir William Hotel is open for food and drink in the evenings Wednesday to Sunday and at lunchtime at weekends. The Maynard hotel serves good food every day and evening. The train station, with a popular cafe, is 25 minutes walk.
