Spello, Umbria - Roman/medieval town of art and flowers

Our home is tucked inside the medieval streets and town walls. It has its own private entrance, terrace, 2 double bedrooms - one ensuite and a separate bathroom. Our home dates back to 13th century and was part of an ancient convent. The original features include wooden beams and vaulted ceilings. The stone walls are a metre thick, so warm in winter and cool in summer. We also have fans/central heating for additional comfort. The dining/kitchen is modern and very well equipped, with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave. There is also a separate dining room and lounge. There is ample free parking nearby. Outside our terrace has tables and chairs. The seaside on the east coast is just over an hours drive and we have everything you need for a day at the seaside or Trasimeno lake.

About the location

Spello is a hillside town, its interlocked stone houses striding up a spur of St Francis`s mountain, Monte Subasio. The splendidly intact town was know as `Hispellum` and is originally a Roman settlement. Amongst its treasures is the most impressive Porta Venere, a gate flanked by two 12-sided towers, standing on the west side of the town. Spello boasts many medieval churches with frescos, one decorated by Pinturicchio in 1501. As you enter Spello via one of its well preserved gates in the Roman walls, you see a town that has aged well and its citizens maintain it with pride. Flowers adorn balconies, walls and stairways. Although there is plenty to keep you occupied, a short trip brings you to olive groves, vineyards, mountains and lakes. Just google spello and you will find so much of interest and festivals to see. There are lots of restaurants, bars and cafes serving the town as well as local shops and a supermarket. Spello is on the main Rome/Florence railway line and has good motorway links. A car is not essential but would enhance your stay. Ample free parking nearby.
