About the location

La Marsa is a prime tourist destination in the well-to-do suburbs of Tunis.
Our house is situated on a quiet residential street in La Marsa where you can enjoy the outdoor space in peace, yet have easy access to main roads. Within a 3 min walking distance we have a bakery/patisserie, pizzaria, 2 mini-supermarkeds, flower-shop, and shop for fresh juice.
La Marsa (7 min drive to center) is a cosy sea side town centered around the wide beach and the near-by market where you can get fresh veggies, fish and meet. Around the market are also various handicraft shops that sell traditional Tunisian textiles, carpets, pottery and wood work. 2 big parks provide lovely outdoor areas close to a selection of good cafes.
The neighboring town, Sidi Bou Said (10 min drive) is a beautifully picturesque village situated on top a cliff over-looking the Mediterranean. The village has narrow cobble-stoned streets (no cars), white walls and blue-painted windows and features lots of cafes and restaurants and tourist shops with some very nice traditional handicrafts.
Next town to the east is Carthage, the old Roman colony (10 min drive). The area here is litered with historical ruins, and also boast the modern Presidential Palace. To the west is Gammarth (10 min drive), where you will find a variety of 5-star hotels and up-scale restaurants. A 20 min drive takes you to down-town Tunis features an extensive Arab medival city center with narrow streets filled with vendors of anything you can think of and the French colonial city center with imposing buildings and cafes on wide boulevards.

Getting around:
A local train from Tunis passes through Carthage and Sidi Bou Said before ending at La Marsa beach. There are also busses and shared taxis (nearest stop 2 min walk from house). Prices in Tunisia are generally very affordable, and taxis are easy to find. Finally, roads are good and google.maps works well here, so it is also an option to rent a car (starting from around TND 300/EUR 100 per week)
