Mount Pleasant cottage

Mount Pleasant is a 300 year old 2 bedroom cottage on the south facing side of the old textile making village of Painswick. The cottage is unusual for its location in that it is detached and sat within a large flat garden. My partner and i have recently modernised the house after it being lived in for 50 years by one family. We have restored the walls with new lime plaster, revealed the Cotswold stone flags on the floor, a large original fireplace with a new large modern wood burner and on the first floor we have raised the ceilings to expose centuries old beams (from old naval timber) and installed a bathroom. The house is set back from vicarage street a street well known to be the most beautiful in the village with wonderful views across the valley. There is no access by car but we have no trouble parking on the street as is the nature of Painswick where most houses are terraced. The peace and quiet is only broken by birds and the occasional neighbour chatting, you will be within the very heart of a gentle beautiful village street on Thursday evenings the local steel band practice in the field behind the house.

We moved here for the countryside walks. There are many on our doorstep we often walk over the hill to the Slad valley famous for Laurie Lee's wonderful writing where you can still see the home he grew up in and walk the paths he did around the valley. Also within walking distance are the beautiful Cotswold villages of Sheepscombe and cranham. Painswick Beacon which sits abouve the village has views across the county to The spa town of Cheltenham and is home to the village golf course. Our village also benefits from having two fantastic local pubs The Oak and The Falcon and the award winning hotel the Painswick all of which offer fantastic food and drinks (whether its coffee, cocktails or local beer). We are a 10 minute drive to the town of Stroud which boasts an utterly fantastic Saturday farmers market and is a hub of creative and artistic events.
