Historic Almshouse

Our house is more than 300 years old. The garden, secured by locked gates, is huge as it is shared with our friends who live in the other almshouses and the chapel. The house is small, being designed for "decayed Mariners and their relics" but the rooms are of generous proportions. The bedroom is reached by a spiral staircase and the ceiling slopes down from the massive roof beam so giants need to take care!

The decor reflects our eclectic taste and delight in finding and incorporating artefacts found here and there; for example, original enamel advertising signs, kitchen taps that began their life on The Orient Express, cushions and fabrics from Bangladesh, embroidery from Uzbekistan and rugs from Afghanistan. There are plenty of books to read, more to look through.

Kitchen and bathroom both work well with the normal essentials in place. There is no dishwasher or tumble dryer.

We hope guests will feel at home and enjoy living comfortably here.

About the location

We live in the heart of Whitechapel, an historic, vibrant and diverse area exactly one mile from the City of London and with excellent travel connections across the whole city. A long street market supplies food and clothes from around the world and Petticoat Lane, Brick Lane and Columbia Road flower markets are all within fifteen minutes walk. The area is bordered by Hackney and Shoreditch attracting many young people to its theatres, restaurants and night life. Genesis, just three minutes walk away, is an award winnining independent cinema.

A large Sainsburys, just across the road, supplies all needs.
